Artist Statement
The Fovea (Latin for "pit") is a depression in the structure of the eye that is essential for high-acuity vision. Damage to the fovea can have catastrophic consequences for central vision.
This artwork is a multi-layered depiction of the eye’s internal structure, with each layer arranged at specific intervals to evoke a sense of time, space, and depth. One of these layers features a projection of eye surgery, serving as a raw metaphor for the harsh realities of today’s world and our desensitization to death and suffering. At the same time, it embodies a critique of contemporary society, suggesting that despite having our eyes open, we often fail to truly see or feel—trapped in an illusory world where selective vision dulls our awareness.
The artwork aligns with the exhibition’s theme, highlighting the conflict between political and social destabilization and the digital apathy of our time. At its core, FOVEA explores the fragility of human perception—how the very organ that grants us sight can also symbolize our selective blindness to socio-political issues. Through its layered, fragile construction, the piece invites viewers to reflect on what it means to truly see in a world where vision is both a gift and a curse.
